Baseball Boys

This year our boys played baseball for the first time ever. Before the season began, I was afraid I might not be cut out to be a baseball mom. But it turned out to be my favorite sport the boys have played. We enjoyed great coaches, supportive parents and lots of little sisters to keep the girls entertained.

I was so proud of the boys for giving their best throughout the season. At 11, Carson did not experience the success he desired, but I told him I was more impressed with his performance in baseball than in any other sport thus far because he did not give up when things didn't go his way. In fact, he is still eager to practice hitting and fielding even after his season has ended. I greatly admire his persistence and know it will pay big rewards in developing his skills and character.

Before this year, I never knew the angst that filled a mother's heart when her child stepped up to the plate. And I couldn't help but smile knowing that a prayer went up somewhere in the stands each time a player took a turn at bat.

Christian's team ended the season on top -- shown here with the first-place trophy. Last night they lost in the tournament to take first runner-up.

And here is Carson with his trophy. His team led the league most of the season, but finished second in the end.

"Baseball is an allegorical play about America -- a poetic, complex and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate and sober self-esteem." -- Saul Steinberg
