China Cabinet Before & After

What is it about this time of year that makes us eager to tackle projects around the house? Perhaps seeing nature spring to life outside our windows inspires us to breathe new life into our homes, as well. I am trying to accomplish a few projects this week, but in the meantime wanted to share one of last year's furniture refinishing projects that I haven't shown you yet.

Joe's mother bought this china cabinet at an estate sale years ago. I loved the architectural details and rich finish, but the piece was pretty banged up. The veneer on the side was damaged, so I decided to give this china cabinet a fresh, new look. I really debated whether to keep a mahogany stain or go white, but ultimately I decided this direction would fit our home best ... .

Here is the refinished china cabinet dressed in Farrow & Ball's All White.

I painted the inside of the cabinet white, then used double-stick tape to line the back with scrapbook paper for a temporary accent. Here is another look at the transformation:

Last year as our china cabinet was doing from dark to light, our floors were going from light to dark. I love both transformations, but feel a little nostalgic about the previous look. Which do you prefer?

It was difficult to photograph the cabinet with all the windows in our house, but this angle gives you a better view of the glass and pretty trim on the front.

Favorite china pieces seem to feel at home in the updated china cabinet, so I am pleased with the fresh, new look. I hope to have more transformations to share with you soon!

"Being surrounded by beauty opens little windows that allow our spirits to breathe. Surely we were not meant to be immune to the wonders about us! And surely we have been given the gifts of creativity and sensitivity partly so that we can grow more attuned to beauty, to the way things were meant to be." -- Emily Barnes, If Teacups Could Talk
