Fall Fun for Preschoolers

Emma's recent preschool Harvest Party was full of activities perfect for preschoolers. Along with visiting the pumpkin patch to pick a pumpkin, one of the highlights of the day was a hayride through nearby farmland.

Pounding pumpkins was great fun for these little ones! All you need is a pumpkin, wooden golf tees and plastic hammers, and you have hours of preschool fun.

Of course, no harvest party would be complete without treats! The children loved fishing for books. We couldn't wait to read this one during our fall break!

Indoors the children planted pumpkin seeds and helped make pumpkin muffins. It was a Harvest Party full of fall fun!

Football Funnies

Watch out! These little moments are sure to tackle your funny bone.

Get to Work, Boys. Five-year-old Mary Ashley has been very serious about learning her new cheers. She practiced one of her favorites before the first game: "Office, Indians, office! [clap, clap] Office, Indians, office!"

True Blue Fan. When Carson was a toddler, Joe was feeling down after his beloved University of Kentucky Wildcats lost a game. "Daddy's sad because the Cats lost," I explained to little Carson. Always eager to help, Carson brightened and said, "No, he's not. I saw him under the car!"

Jersey Boys. Seven-year-old Christian was so excited to suit up for his first practice in full uniform, he ran to his room right after school to change. He stayed in his room for a while and finally emerged in tears because he had tried every tee-shirt in his drawer and couldn't get any of them on over his pads. He was so relieved to learn football players wear jerseys!

Must-Watch. Another of Mary Ashley's favorite cheers is, "What do we want? TV! What's that? Touchdown!"

Cheers to Emma. Three-year-old Emma was beyond thrilled to join the cheerleaders on the field during Carson's game Saturday. She gave Mary Ashley a big hug and stood beside her big sister to do her favorite cheer: Stomp and Scream. Emma has a difficult time saying the letter S, so it is so cute to hear her cheer, "Tomp and cream for the Indian team!"

One Wild Birthday

We went wild for Joe's birthday over the weekend with all of his favorites: food, family and football! Keeping in mind that fourth "F" Joe thinks about -- finances -- I knew I needed to keep our celebration economical. But I just couldn't stop myself from going wild!

With wildflowers, that is! The boys and I stopped by an abandoned field on our way home from the morning's football games to gather some of the wildflowers I have been admiring in our area. Clustered into a blue-and-white pitcher, they really looked stunning on the dining room table.

With a soft blue quilt, blue-and-white Spode china, and white pumpkin soup bowls, we were ready to enjoy Joe's favorite football Saturday supper: Chili!

Happy Birthday, Joe!

I hope our simple celebration showed Joe that we are wild about him!

Birthday Boutique Menu

The food was all in good taste at my niece Kadence's first birthday party.

I made Kadence's cake, a ribbon-wrapped two-tiered strawberry cake with buttercream icing. Black ribbon woven through the serving platter coordinated with the cake's black monogram.

Kadence enjoyed digging in to this smaller monogrammed cake! The square plate belonged to my late grandmother. I had it in my cupboard awaiting the perfect occasion to bring it out, and it suited Kadence's Birthday Boutique perfectly.

Chocolate-dipped strawberries are always a classic choice. Shana made these, and they went fast!

Besides cake and chocolate-dipped strawberries, the party menu included fruit and caramel dip, lemonade, wheat crackers and a zesty ranch dip.

Ranch Salsa Dip

8 ounces light cream cheese
8 ounces light sour cream
1 ounce Hidden Valley Ranch Salad Dressing mix
10 ounce can Rotel diced tomatoes and green chiles (mild or regular), well drained

Mix all ingredients, adding one at a time, then chill. Serve with Wheat Thins.

Favor-ite Strawberry Cookies

Shana adapted this recipe for butterscotch cookies to make a strawberry version. These made sweet favors for guests at Kadence's party.

Strawberry Cookies

1 package strawberry cake mix
1/2 cup cooking oil
2 tablespoons water
2 eggs
3/4 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup white chocolate chips.

Blend cake mix, oil, water and eggs. Stir in chocolate and white chocolate chips. Drop from a teaspoon onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 10 minutes. Cool on a cookie sheet for about 1 minute, then remove to paper towels to finish cooking. Yields about 35 cookies.

Pitcher Perfect

A few accessories, and last-season's lemonade is runway-ready. For daughter, Kadence's, first-birthday party, my sister-in-law Shana took a style cue from hats she has been making and outfitted this glass pitcher with ribbon and a large silk flower. She dropped a few fresh strawberries into the lemonade, placed it on a party plate, and this pitcher was ready for her close-up!

Model Family

I think my brother, Nathan, and his wife, Shana, look like they should be on a magazine cover! I can only think of one thing that could make this picture any more beautiful.

And that would be adding sweet little Kadence to the frame!

Here Kadence spends a little time with her two favorite aunts: my beautiful sister, Jennifer, and me.

My parents are all smiles as they pose with Kadence.

Nathan catches a tender moment between me and the Birthday Girl.

I can't believe I did not get a picture of Emma with her "Uncle Nafan." She really bonded with Nathan during the party, and -- much to her daddy's dismay -- has reminded us all week, "I sat beside Kadence's daddy at supper. I'm him's girl!"

Birthday Boutique Chic

For my niece's first birthday party, guests were invited to the grand opening of Kadence's Birthday Boutique. My sister-in-law Shana chose a vibrant color scheme of hot pink and black for the party with trendy tableware from Hobby Lobby. We used ribbon liberally throughout the decor and further personalized the space with monograms. Vinyl monograms added a pop of style to helium balloons, while a printed monogram dressed up an empty frame.

Nathan's photography added style to Kadence's birthday invitation and served as decoration at the party. Dress forms added boutique chic, and pink and white Gerber daisies completed the look.

What's in store at Kadence's Birthday Boutique? Tomorrow will be picture perfect, and Friday promises to be sweet!

Style Watch: Kadence's Birthday Boutique

Niece Kadence celebrated her first birthday in a big way Saturday with a boutique-themed party. My sister-in-law Shana asked me to make a party dress for Kadence using this pattern.

Shana made coordinating headbands for little guests who visited Kadence's Birthday Boutique. (Find directions here for making your own with dollar store headbands.) Notice the coordinating headband Shana made for herself. Could my sister-in-law be any more beautiful?

Here 3-year-old Emma models the new headband and boa she picked up at the hottest new boutique in town, inspired by the little fashionista below.

Although Shana gave her a new boa at the party, Kadence pulled out this boa she received at Mary Ashley's Fancy Nancy party in January. It must be a classic! And, of course, Kadence knows that the perfect accessory for any outfit is a thumb.

Here is a shot of Kadence's birthday boutique, a posh spot set up in a corner of the dining room where little girls shopped for this season's must-have boas and headbands. Shana even set up a mirror so the little shoppers could admire their new accessories.

My almost-2-year-old niece Caitlin poses here in her new boa. I was thrilled to see that she can still wear the dress I made for her first birthday! My little nieces are too cute for words!

Still to come in this fashion week: decor, food and family moments!

"They Love Me ..."

"They love me lots!"

That is what my little niece Kadence must have been thinking when friends and family gathered Saturday to celebrate her first birthday. I am still sorting through the hundreds of pictures my dad, brother and I took during the party, but these images will give you just a little glimpse of the fun to come this week as I share details from Kadence's party.

Tie ribbons around a simple bud vase to create bands of color like I did for whimsical arrangements at Kadence's party.

First birthday parties are a great way to mark a precious milestone in a child's life, as well as to celebrate a couple's first year of parenting. Choosing a party theme can be the most difficult aspect of planning the party. I like to suggest that the theme have some family significance. In the case of my brother and sister-in-law, daughter Kadence has inspired her mom to learn to make hair bows. Shana even sells them now in several area boutiques! Nathan is an avid photographer, and Kadence is an adorable muse for his artwork. So I suggested that they plan to incorporate Nathan's photography and Shana's ribbon in invitations, decor and favors. One of Kadence's favorite items is the blue boa she received at Mary Ashley's Fancy Nancy party when she was 3 months old. (Didn't I say you're never too young to be fancy?) So putting all these together, Nathan and Shana developed the perfect birthday party theme ...

Kadence's Birthday Boutique!

Add a dollop of daisies to a ribbon-wrapped vase to add a touch of style to party tables.

You won't want to miss the grand opening of Kadence's Birthday Boutique, so stop in throughout the week for the latest trends in first-birthday party fun -- from wardrobe basics to this season's most stylish accessories!

Ladies Day Recipes: Breakfast in a Cup in Georgia

Ladies at the Forrest Park Church of Christ in Valdosta, Ga., welcomed guests at Saturday's ladies day with great breakfast fare.

During registration, the ladies of Forrest Park served breakfast pastries, coffee and orange juice. But the highlight of the morning menu was breakfast in a cup. Made popular by a Valdosta-area restaurant, breakfast in a cup was new to me. I thought it was delicious. And once I coaxed 3-year-old Emma to try a bite, she wanted the rest of my serving.

Breakfast in a cup worked well for our ladies day, but it would also be a hearty breakfast option for breakfast on the go on busy school mornings. To make breakfast in a cup, per serving, simply combine 1 cup cooked grits; about 1 sausage patty (cooked and crumbled); and cheese, butter, salt and pepper to taste.
