Happy Birthday, Cupcake!

We travelled to Nashville, Tenn., over the weekend for my sweet niece Caitlin's first birthday. My sister, Jennifer, planned a cupcake themed birthday party with a pink and brown color scheme. Every detail was adorable, just like the Birthday Girl!

Jennifer asked me to make Caitlin's birthday outfit, and I surprised her by making the dress reversible. Coordinating bloomers will look cute with both sides of the dress. Covered buttons and rickrack at the hem add sweet details.

Aunt Melissa's Bakery was happy to deliver cupcakes for the party. In keeping with the pink-and-brown color scheme, we tempted guests with sweet strawberry cupcakes covered in ruffles of pink buttercream icing and decadent chocolate cupcakes topped with chocolate buttercream icing and chocolate curls. To make the chocolate curls, I microwaved one square each of bakers chocolate and white chocolate for 25 seconds. I allowed the chocolate to cool for a few minutes, then shaved the squares with a vegetable peeler. I let the resulting curls fall back onto the plate and put the plate in the freezer until they hardened to the touch. Then I tucked curls onto the cupcakes and sprinkled extra curls onto the serving dishes.

And these cupcakes are meant to last. Jennifer prepared sweet pink and brown gift bags for all the children at the party, and I embroidered coordinating turtlenecks for the girls. Jennifer included toys for the boys, and she finished off each bag with a pink and brown polka dotted bag of pink M&Ms. The children were so excited over their goodies, but the sweetest treat of all for everyone was spending time with Caitlin. Happy Birthday, Cupcake!

I just wanted to stop by to thank you for visiting my blog as part of BATW today!

I really enjoyed the thoughts you shared about why the Amish and English might be fearful of one another. I responded to your thoughts in my comments section.

And oh my goodness lady...you are one creative person!! I can't get over this beautiful birthday party that you helped to put together. Your sister was lucky to have you help out!

BTW where did you get the pattern for the dress that you made? I want to make some like that for my little girl (of course mine might not come out so pretty but at least I can try).

Melissa, I think you should enter this in the Martha Stewart's machine embroidery contest. Here is the link:

Hi Melissa,
I feel bad that I'm writing to you as anonymous but I have no blog as of yet. I just have to echo and say what a joy you and your blog are. I can't believe you have only been blogging (not even) a year yet. I too wonder how you accomplish so much while raising a young family. You are truly blessed to have such talent and such a big heart to do all that you do for so many, your family, friends and...especially we readers of your blog. Your embroidered items are true keepsakes and such a welcome gift to anyone who is on the receiving end. So sweet!!! I have always wanted a machine but need a push to buy just the right one. Any help or suggestions in that area would be greatly appreciated if you have time to comment sometime. I know you're busy!!! Thanks for the inspiration Melissa. You've been such a blessing in my life.
In Him,
Kim

Oh, Kim, thank you so much for your kind words! You have made my day! I have the Babylock Ellure, which is the lowest machine on the Babylock scale. But I love it and find that it can do everything I want and more. I recommend machines that use PES files. That allows you access to free designs on www.annthegran.com. And it seems the default for most embroidery design programs is PES. I hope this helps!

Hi Melissa,
Thank you ve-r-r-y much for responding to my request to learn which embroidery machine to buy. It was a huge help! I am just thrilled that you shared which one you actually use and love. You have saved me a lot of time and probably money in my search. I love how open and willing you are to share all that you do. Thank you for that. We should all have and be a friend like you.
In Him,
Kim (from Colorado)

BTW, I loved your entry today about your son's book. 'Such a thoughtful way to capture family memories). Blessings to you and yours!

Hi Melissa, I was searching for pink & brown birthday dresses on the internet and I saw the picture of the reversible pink & brown polka dot cupcake dress and matching bloomers and fell in love with it!!!! My daughter will be 1 on October 6th, 2009, and I was trying to find the perfect dress for her to wear to her first birthday party. I know that this is a blog site, but do you make these dresses and sell them and if not would you please consider making one for me? I saw that you lived in Alabama. I live in Georgia. I just have to have this dress!!!! Could you please get back with me on this soon. I would greatly appreciate it very much!!!

Oh, Abby, I just popped over to this post to copy the link for tomorrow's post, and I can't believe I am just discovering your request! I had to check the date and can't believe you left this request in August and I just discovered it on the eve of your daughter's birthday. I'm so sorry I was not able to correspond with you about it earlier, but hope you found something precious for her big day!

Melissa, It's okay! I just saw that you had responded back. I did end up finding something else for her to wear for her party. Her party was pink and chocolate and her outfit was very similar to yours. I would still like to know if you do make those dresses for people and how much. I love it!! Thanks for responding back to me.

You are so talented and blessed. I just happened upon your site as I look for my daughter her first birthday outfit. She is our only child and we are so excited to be celebrating her first birthday. I had the same request as another person. Do you sell your work? I love the pink and brown. Her nursery is done in pink and brown dots. THank you so much for your ideas and beautiful work. You have inspired me. Bless you!

Hi Melissa,
I can't believe it took me so long but I finally bought a long awaited embroidery machine. I originally wrote to you back on December 9th and 10th of 2008 inquiring about the type of machine you use in your "Happy Birthday Cupcake" post and you were nice enough to share what kind of machine you had with me. My husband is starting his own business now so I thought it would be fun to embroider his logo on some shirts for him...and also have fun doing some cute things for the special girls in my life--3daughters and 5 granddaughters.
I can't wait to start using my machine but I fear I bit off more than I bargained for. I bought a Babylock Emore (emb. only) which uses PES files. Can you please suggest a good software program for creating monograms and other designs that you might use? You make it look so easy with all that you do. I coninue to read your blog after all these years and am still inspired by you and your creativity. Thank you for any help you can give. Blessings to you and your sweet family.
Kim
