The Write Stuff

Excitement was high on the first day that all four children went to school, so I thought I would plan a special family dinner to get the school year off on the write foot. The children gave my pencil-themed decor good marks. Click on the collage to catch more of the details!

For the arrangements, I filled small bud vases with flowers. Then I slid a rubber band around each vase and slipped a handful of pencils under the rubber band. When the vase was covered, I tied a ribbon around the pencils to cover the rubber band.

The centerpiece of our table was a pencil cake. I baked a cake mix in a loaf pan and shaved slivers of cake off to form the tip. (These pencil shavings didn't last long!) Pink, yellow and gray icing helped the pencil take shape, and chocolate chips and a Hershey's Kiss added the final details. We enjoyed this pencil for dessert, and so far no one has developed lead poisoning!

A handful of pencils and a card printed with Proverbs 1:1-6 made nice favors. Had I thought about it earlier, I would have ordered personalized pencils for the children. (Find them here, here and here.) That would have made our dinner extra special!

So if you are looking for a fun way to celebrate the start of another school year, pencil in family fun with a tablescape that has all the write stuff.

what a great way to end/ start. I love your cake. Do you mind if I steal your 'personalised pencil idea'? It will be the perfect thank you gift for my daughter's birthday on september 7th. Which is also the beginning of school.

Thank you again for your inspirational blogs. They help me find blessings and joy in every little smile, thought, corner, thing......Although we don't know eachother personally, you feel like a friend....Thank you.

I love that you treat your children as the most honored guests you'll ever have!

My mother always did the same for us growing up, and I'm so thankful for all those memories. I hope I'm able to do the same for mine.

You blog is my new favorite! Just found it yesterday. I love pretty things, and your pictures and ideas are just that. Those candles with the circles on them...did you attach those circles? Or buy them that way. I would love to know how to decorate plain pillar candles.

Christina, thank you for your kind words. Please, use any ideas here that you like!

Donna, thank you for visiting! I found those cute candles at Hobby Lobby. I love pink and green, so have used these often. Sometime I plan to do a post about cutting and applying vinyl decals, so check back for that.

Thanks for the candle info Melissa. I actually happen to be headed to Hobby Lobby today to search for 1)little carry out boxes that will become Blessing Boxes for my 1st grade SS class and 2)pink and green fabric for making a new table runner for myself! :)

I have a little beginner's blog called http://simplethingssweetlife.blogspot.com/. You might enjoy seeing the little side table I refurbished from Goodwill.

Blessings!

Shannon told me Mary Ashley and Taylor got in the same ballet class and we are so happy! Looking forward to a wonderful dance and school year.

Shannon has trouble with the toy situation too but remember she has that room off her den that is the toy room, it looks like every toy invented is in there! They are going to purge those toys b/c the twins don't really play with them anymore, and make that an office/play room.

I wish we had a place for a coat rack like I made Shannon and her long hallway was perfect for this project. We don't have backpacks and lunch boxes so I don't really know what we'd hang on it...it would just look cute!

Hope to see you soon,
Judy
